Dear Lord, I love all of these!
Wow, I've long been a fan of old Soviet stuff, I had no idea the history of this sort of propaganda ran so much deeper! I LOVE the illustrations, they're like some Victorian work but a lot more sinister!

Oh, those wacky, whimsical, happy-go-lucky Russians! As a culture, they're just so jocular and not at all morose... ;)
Whenever I feel the need for a quick pick-me-up, I always crack open some Crime and Punishment or Nikolai Gogol. :D In all seriousness, though, Dostoyevsky is one of my favorite novelists...
But back to these amazing images...I think #12 (referring to the image name, not the sequence) is my fave...just the way the rider's arm is weighted down by the sword, and the triumph of the Death figure...just chilling. Though some of the details in the others are really intriguing...such as the dragon in #9, or the fact that the guy is fighting the vampire bats off with some pliers in #13...And then I think just the weird surreal nightmare story of #14--the wig on the floor, the taper in the wind, the gigantic scale of the figure next to the helpless little girl, the slipping mask...just fascinating.

I like the pic where some blokes appear to be negotiating with Death.
The texture of these is wonderful. The surplus of skulls and skeletons feels a little Mexican to me.
All of it is imbued with great sadness, and a resolve that nothing will change.
